Need books, articles about the reality of the process of scientific research with all its ups and downs.?

I will be teaching honors students (college sophmores) about research. Nearly all texts give idealized views of the research process. In reality, research is hard work-- mental and often physical work. It is filled with frustrations and disappointments punctuated by the shear delight in discovering something new. Also lab and field research are both highly social, collaborative activities so interpersonal relationships are important. I would like to provide my students with books or articles that provide acutual case historiers of research. These could be non-fiction (preferable) or fiction. I know about the "Double Helix" by James Watson but it is more a personal memior that an unbiased description of the research process. Can anyoneone out there provide references?
